coming home to crete
There is no question that Crete is a special place. There's an energy and flow here that isn't something you can describe but needs to be felt.
Anna Maria was born and raised outside of Boston, Massachusetts. The daughter of Cretan immigrants, her love for Crete began years before she ever visited. She grew up hearing stories about her ancestral home. She still remembers the energy that flowed through her the first time she stepped foot on the island at 9 years old. She was home. Every summer in Crete since then she would decide that she belonged here but it would take another 20 years for her to make the move permanently. In that time she studied wine with the International Sommelier Guild and became a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers. She has always had an interest and focus on Greek wines. She currently writes for her blog Unraveling Wine and several international magazines and publications.
The next time she felt a such an immediate strong connection was when she was having coffee with a friend on the Old Venetian Port in Chania. It was then she first laid eyes on the man who would become her husband. Vasilis was born and raised in Modesto, California. Also the son of Cretan immigrants, his love for Crete was as strong as anything. In California, Vasilis dabbled in wine making with friends. But the instinctual urge to make wine and olive oil from his grandfather's land would always have him longing for Crete.
After years of trying to find happiness in the American rat race, the newly engaged couple decided to take the risk to move to Crete during the most difficult economic time. The pull to Crete was no longer something they could ignore. With each other's support they packed up and took the leap in July of 2013.
Later that month they were married surrounded by friends from all over the world. Fast forward to now and they have two beautiful boys who equally love running through the vineyards and groves.
In the summer of 2017, they founded Chania Wine Tours. Their focus is teaching their guests about the local grapes, wineries, and the history of Cretan wine. Guests learn how to properly taste wine, a skill that can be used for a lifetime. Most importantly, guests have fun on one of their precious vacation days.
Anna Maria and Vasilis are happy and proud to call Chania their home. Crete is magic and they want to show you all the places that made their hearts sing so many years ago.
