After check-in, we guide you on a walking tour of Chania’s picturesque Old Town. We combine popular, must-see spots like the Venetian Harbor and Lighthouse, ancient sites, as well as some neighborhoods and streets that only the locals know. Our walking tour concludes on the most photographed street in Chania where you enjoy a 4 course meal with wine pairing at the hottest restaurant in town.
If your flight arrives before the hotel is ready to check you in, we will customize the morning with sightseeing and lunch for an additional 50e per person.
Wine and Olive Oil are as essential to Cretans as water and air. Today we will explore these two vital components of life on the island. Our first stop is to have a panoramic view of the olive trees from the cave of Saint John the Hermit. We explore the cave and can taste the holy water that drips from the cave walls. Next we head to Biolea, an olive oil mill that makes pure, organic, stone-milled olive oil. You will have a guided tour by the owner and taste 3 flavors of this liquid gold. To conclude our olive oil adventures for the day, we will also visit the oldest olive tree in the world and visit the olive oil museum next to it.
Now off for a privately guided tour of the vineyards! Chania Wine Tours is the only tour in Greece led by a Certified Sommelier. Anna Maria will walk you through the vineyards and explain the history of Cretan wine. At Anoskeli Winery, Anna Maria will teach the four steps to taste wine like a professional. An ample snack of cheese, salami, cucumbers, tomatoes, bread, and olives will be served alongside the five wines.
Now that you’ve learned how to taste wine, it’s time to learn how it’s made! The layout at Manousakis Winery is ideal for visualizing the wine making process. On this privately guided tour, the fermentation, maceration, stabilization and other processes will be explained in as much detail as you want. A visit to the barrel room and bottling line complete this tour. Next stop is the tasting area to enjoy the highly acclaimed wines. A four course lunch with unlimited wine is served.
We return you to the hotel in the early evening to rest or explore the town on your own.
Day 3- Choice of Elafonissi Beach OR Samaria Gorge
There are beach bums and mountain lovers, depending on which one you are, choose between the pink sand beaches of Elafonissi or the largest gorge in Europe. If you’re both, click here.
Elafonissi is consistently rated among the best beaches in the world. If you choose Elafonissi, we begin the day early to beat the crowds. On our way, we pass a truly unique clay formation that’s worth a quick stop. We wind our way to the south coast of Chania. We stop and see the Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa before arriving at the beach. For the next 3 hours, the pink sands and turquoise waters are yours to enjoy. Have your choice of beach blanket or sunbeds. We provide you with a picnic style lunch.
On our way back north, we stop at a traditional taverna for dinner.
After a long day of sunshine, we return you to your hotel.
If you choose Samaria Gorge, we drive to the entrance of the gorge at Omalos. The gorge starts at an altitude of about 1,200 meters. Vasili will hike the 16 kilometers with you. This downhill hike through the largest gorge in Europe takes about 4-5 hours to complete. A good pair of walking shoes is recommended. We will provide a shepherd’s lunch complete with tsikoudia to keep your energy up. The gorge ends in the beach village of Agia Roumeli which is only accessible by ferry. Don’t forget your swimsuits! You’ll want a dip after the hike. The last stop on the ferry is Paleochora. Anna Maria will meet you there. We will have dinner at a local rustic tavern and a couple glasses of wine at one of the best wine bars in Crete before heading back north to the hotel. Feel free to fall asleep on the ride back.
After breakfast and check out we take you to the Akrotiri peninsula to see the beautiful Monastery of Agia Triada. We will walk through the vineyards and taste the wine and products made by the monks. Next we head to Ancient Aptera, an archeological site first mentioned 3500 years ago and remained a powerful city until the earthquakes of the 7th century. Ruins from the Minoan, Kydonian, Roman, and Byzantine eras are present.
Lastly, we arrive at Dourakis Winery, a family owned winery in the Apokoronas region of Chania. Meet the winemakers and enjoy a guided tour of their cellar that is built in to the mountain. Taste 5 wines and enjoy a traditional lunch with unlimited wine.
We bid your farewell. We are happy to drive you to the airport or to your next destination in Chania.
